North Route

THE EAST SUMMIT CLIMB
(5,621M)
If you are reading these lines, then you’ve seen huge mountains and have fallen in love with them sincerely and forever. You’re dreaming about distant mountain silhouettes, deep blue skies and the frosty breath of a glacier.

It’s time to test your love.
Welcome to the Northern slope of Elbrus!

Fair and square

The body stress during the North Route climb is the same as during the Himalayan 6000m peak climb. There are no snowcats, no cable cars, no electricity. The change in altitude during the summit push is 1840m

3 climb attempts

July and August is when there is the most stable weather on Mount Elbrus. Nevertheless, we’ve planned 3 extra days to reach the summit without taking risks!

Convenient schedule

Group gathering in Pyatigorsk is on Wednesday. Flights home are on Saturdays. And there is still some time to rest in St. Petersburg or in Moscow after the expedition. We make the most of the weekends!

3 Reasons to Choose elbrus.guide

The North Route climb is a real challenge. We choose smooth acclimatization, good rest and a well-planned route because we are goal-oriented.

1
Group safety
The group is led by 2 guides on the summit day. There is a satellite phone and a GPS tracking unit and we are always in touch with a Russian Emergency Ministry outpost
2
3 summit attempts
We don’t take any chances, so we’ve planned enough summit attempts, given the nasty temper of the Elbrus Northern slope
3
Recommendations
People choose this route before high-altitude trekking or climbs in the Himalayas on their friends' recommendation. This is the best starting point for the journey into the world of "big mountains"

1
Thermal underwear
It’s the first line of defense against the cold and wicks away moisture. It’s better to take lightweight underwear to move freely. Comfortable to sleep in. Two sets are necessary. Fits perfectly with athletic style underwear.
2
Casual clothing
Lightweight microfibre trousers, fleece or Climashield coat. Your clothes should be comfortable and allow you to move freely.
3
Wind protection
Worn over your casual clothes at high altitudes, during rain and strong winds. Made of expensive breathable GoreTex-type fabrics. Jacket is required, trousers are optional (for those sensitive to cold). Should fit well over your casual clothes.
4
Outer insulated layer
Down jacket, down pants or down shorts. Effectively protects you against cold and wind, lightweight and compact when packed. Sensitive to water. Down trousers are a full substitute to wind protection trousers. Outer layer should fit well over your wind protection layer.
5
Footwear and warm accessories
There are two types of footwear for Mt. Elbrus: everyday boots and mountaineering boots. If it’s your first climb, the mountaineering boots can be rented. It definitely pays to buy them if you are going to climb after Elbrus. You need to have your own everyday boots. These are hiking boots with a hard sole. Should be high-ankled and 1.5 — 2 sizes bigger + CROCS-style footwear with a closed toe. Lightweight and waterproof, they are used during rest and in the shower.

Hat (buff), hiking socks, light gloves, down mittens, gaiters. A buff is a universal and convenient accessory, it’s better to have two (for head and neck). Hiking socks effectively wick sweat from the feet and provide cushion, but can be expensive. Lightweight synthetic gloves for everyday usage protect hands from wind exposure. Down mittens are essential during the summit push and at high altitudes. Gaiters are worn over hiking boots and they protect the lower part of your trousers from dirt, dust, water and wind.

So there, the tremor left my hands
Now - to the top.
My fear has plunged into the depths
Now, I won't stop!
No cause for rest, no time to ease up
I skid, I screech,
And in this world there are no peaks
That can't be reached!
